Secure communication products and solutions are increasingly required to provide Privacy, Authentication, data Integrity, and Non-Repudiation (PAIN) services to communication and data transmission systems, such as:
- Secure data links to and from airborne, satellite, ground- and sea-based remote platforms.
- Secure command and control for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems.
- Strategic and tactical signal intelligence systems that detect, collect, identify, analyze, and disseminate information.
- Low-power cryptographic modules for battery-powered systems.
- High-performance in-line 10/40/100 Gbps network cryptographic services for the Global Information Grid (GIG).
Wireless Secure Communications System
Because recent developments around the world have shown the need for greater interoperability between the various allied forces, the U.S. military is engaged in a major upgrade to its military radio capabilities. The effort is known as the Cryptographic Modernization Program. Similarly, an emergency responder program known as SAFECOM from the Department of Homeland Security has enhanced radio interoperability with security between multiple public emergency services (such as law enforcement, emergency medical services, and firefighters).
Altera provides low-power, secure FPGA solutions to many military secure communication programs, including the joint tactical radio system (JTRS) for the U.S. military, as well as many handheld civilian public mobile radios. Our high-reliability FPGAs are ideal for this application, enabling the implementation of Suite A and B algorithms, while optimizing size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) system parameters.
We also deliver low-power solutions—through our MAX® II, Cyclone® III, Cyclone® III LS, and HardCopy® series ASIC device families—used in the most demanding battery-powered applications.
Wireline Secure Communications System
Network centricity (netcentric) is a key trend in military communications. The Department of Defense's GIG is the core of netcentric operations. The GIG provides global network connectivity for logistics, warfighters, and military business traffic on a state-of-the-art network. Securing this network to provide a “Black Core” requires state-of-the-art technology. As the leader in 40G and 100G network processing devices, we deliver products used in securing the highest network rates currently deployed, with technology also capable of securing next-generation networks.
Altera® Stratix® V and Stratix IV FPGAs combine high-performance and high-speed I/O capabilities needed and deployed in the most advanced network applications.
Encryption Technology Evolution
Given the proliferation of network-enabled embedded systems in military and civilian applications, strong encryption is an imperative to keep communications and data secure. Stringent security requirements imposed on the implementation of the encryption schemes enable stronger security and the ability to process rapidly growing information rates. At the same time, with rapidly deploying netcentric operations, the encryption functions within these devices need to be secure, and reconfigurable to defeat attempts to compromise security.
The Stratix V and Stratix IV, Cyclone III LS, Cyclone III, and MAX II device families provide embedded security features that protect FPGA designs.
